As the third largest city in France Lyon has an incredibly multicultural population; whilst it's status as the French Roman Catholic capital makes it an important destination for ecclesiastical affairs. Situated in the south-east of the country, Lyon is a few hours drive from the French-Swiss border. Capital of the Rhone-Alpes region, Lyon is intersected by the Rhone and Saone Rivers and is home to several key French landmarks - the Place Bellacour is one of the largest open squares in Europe, whilst Notre-Dame de Fouviere's distinctive façade is the subject of many tourist snaps. Lyon's Musee de la Civilisation Gallo-Romaine is the second largest museum in the country, whilst the Old Town centre has been UNESCO World Heritage listed. Lyon is serviced by Saint-Exupery International Airport, the fourth busiest in France with over seven million passengers annually. The airport is situated to the east of Lyon just off of the A432 motorway, and has presently got three terminals in operation. Airlines that visit the complex include Easy Jet (Terminal 3), Air France (Terminal 2), British Airways (Terminal 1) and BMI (Terminal 1). Exploring the surrounding region - Saint Etienne, Grenoble, Chambery and Geneva (Switzerland) are all close by - is easiest done by car, and as such it is advisable to make use of the car hire facilities at the airport.
